Jackson Civic Center to offer much to community

JACKSON, MO (KFVS) -

If you live in or near the city of Jackson you will soon have a new place to take shelter during natural disasters and a place to take part in community events.

The facility is for the community and surrounding area and aims to provide a safe, yet fun environment for anyone who wants to come.

The Southeast Missouri Medical Center, Inc. (SMMC) group donated $4,200,000 to help build the community center for Jackson residents. The city also received $2,800,000 from FEMA to build a safe room that is estimated to hold up to 2,000 people during a tornado.

The Clark family also made made a contribution on the land project where the project was constructed.

A .25 percent sales tax was passed by the residents of Jackson in Nov. 2012. The revenue from this tax will be used to cover operational costs of the new center.

The Jackson Civic Center is expected to cost more $5 million.

Its expected opening date is January 1, 2016.
