The holiday season is here and the United States Postal Service is offering tips to keep your gifts safe in the coming weeks.

The USPS is expected to deliver 15.5 billion letters, cards, flats, and packages during the 2015 holiday season. Nearly 600 million packages alone are expected to be delivered between Thanksgiving day and New Year's Eve.

Carterville, Illinois resident and retired financial planner, Margie O'Keefe, said holiday thieves concern her.

“If we’re gone for a couple of days we have great neighbors so we’d have them pick up are package," O'Keefe said. “With are mail if were gone for very long we just have it held.”

She said she does quite a bite of holiday shopping online on places like Amazon, Walamart, and LL bean.

Her neighbor and Doctor George Elias said he has never had to worry about packages being stolen but this season he'll rethink it.

“Online we order for our friends where they get the gifts without [going to the store] and we get gifts from our friends on Amazon, ebay, a lot of shopping online," Elias said. “Maybe if it’s an expensive piece I’ll pay more attention to that.”

Spokesperson Valerie Welsch for the St. Louis Postal Office said in a statement there are many ways to safeguard your mail.

“You wouldn’t leave your wallet or purse on the front seat of your unlocked car in the driveway at night,” Welsch said in a statement. “Neither should you leave your mail or parcels unprotected.”

  • If you won’t be home for several days you can request for USPS to hold your mail.
  • Never leave items in your vehicle or unattended on your door step
  • Offer to collect a neighbors mail until they arrive home and ask them to do the same. You can even ask to send items to their home.

USPS also has several ways you can take package delivery into your own hands. You can time deliveries and locations, track your packages through text alerts, and upgraded package security using Registered Mail Service will insure most packages up to $100 that protect from loss or damage.

You may also consider purchasing Post Office Box at a post office or near your home or business.
