Heartland News Now: Healthy Recipe Substitutions

Dietitian Christa Hudson is back on Heartland News Now to share some quick tips to make your favorite Thanksgiving recipes a bit healthier.

First, appetizers.

In any artichoke dip, simply swap mayonnaise for nonfat Greek yogurt.

This one substitute will save you around 90 calories a serving.

Next up, mashed potatoes are a holiday favorite.

But instead of using butter and heavy cream to create smooth, creamy mashed potatoes, use evaporated nonfat milk.

This quick switch will save you around 100 calories per serving and you won't be able to tell the difference!

And now for dessert.

Fall is the perfect time of year for spice cake.

This is an easy change-up.

With a standard box recipe for spice cake, substitute 1 cup of unsweetened applesauce and 3/4 cup water for the usual eggs and oil.

This will save you 80 calories per serving and it's just as moist as the original recipe.

Here's to a little healthier holiday!
