SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

A mix-up may have caused a delay in donations this year for Scott and Mississippi County foster children.

The phone number for The Department of Family Services in Sikeston changed right around donation time.

Since the confusion, the organization said donations have increased, but they need more.

Their program allows you to adopt an "angel" to shop for.

Each donor buys gifts for their angel and brings them to the department.

Every year family services holds a holiday party for the foster children.

Their department manager said the children really enjoy this time of year.

"I think it's just a very happy day for them to kind of see the workers in a different light. Playing a different role for them," Circuit Manager Jana Wyman said. "They know that their community and their worker loves and supports them. They're not just another name on their caseload. They're real children to them. Our workers care a lot about our children, and our whole community cares a lot about our children."

Beyond donations, the department said the entire state of Missouri needs more foster parents.

Currently there are more than 100 foster children between both counties.

If there are not enough foster parents, the department said it's possible the kids are moved out of the county.

Which makes it harder to see their family or stay in the same school.

To adopt an angel you can call 573-472-5826.
