How much is too much when it comes to shopping?

Shopping for the holidays is right around the corner, but how much is too much when it comes to buying?

Researchers say about 6 percent of Americans are shopaholics, and this time of the year with all the deals and sales, it can be difficult for someone who has “compulsive buying disorder.”

Whether it’s clothes, nice jewelry or a new guitar you’re interested in, all of it can add up.

And when your purchasing is going overboard on a constant basis, it could be something more than just a little "retail therapy."

According to Daily Finance, some signs of this potential problem are many unopened or tagged items in your closet, feeling guilty after you’ve made your purchases, or you’re trying to hide your shopping habits – by hiding shopping bags from others.

Some people said they're surprised the percentage isn't higher when talking about how roughly 6 percent of people are known to be shopaholics.

“I know quite a few people who do quite a bit of shopping and that just sounds like a small percentage in my mind," Lane Eberlin said.

“Well people have needs and then people have a lot of wants so it’s kind of hard to get away from the wants," Nicholas Holden said.

So if you or someone you know might have a shopping addiction, there are some tips Daily Finance shared: one is is identifying certain triggers. Do you always go shopping after an argument or after a tough day at work? When these feelings happen, try and find other activities to do to relieve that stress, in a healthy way.

Another tip is leaving your credit and debit cards at home.

Also,  when making a list when you do need to go shopping, be sure to stick with It. Getting help, whether it's professional or asking a family member or friend to stick to a solid shopping plan.
