Space heaters are a great way to save some cash by heating individual rooms during the winter season, but they do come with some risks.

Here's a list of tips to keep you safe this holiday season.

According to Nationwide Insurance, space heaters lead to an estimated 19,300  house fires each year and more than half-a-billion dollars in damages each year. Nationwide reports these types of fires also account for 360 deaths and more than 1,000 injuries each year.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Chief Mike Hertz with the Carbondale, Illinois Fire Department, November through February are the busiest months for fire fighters.

“The potential for a space heater fire is pretty high," Hertz said. He's worked with the department for 12 years.

Hertz offered a few tips for when you plug in a space heater:

  • Never leave a space heater unattended
  • Keep the unit away from water
  • Place the heater on a flat floor. Avoid placing units on dressers or places where they can fall or be knocked off
  • Plug directly into the wall and do not use power strips or extension cords
  • Do not cover unit cords
  • Keep anything that can catch fire at least 3 feet away from the unit
