CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Boy scouts took to the streets in Southeast Missouri today collecting bags of food left at peoples doors.

Scouts and volunteers were at Arena Park on Saturday where they dropped off and boxed up canned and dry foods. Pack leaders said it's beneficial for scouts to be involved and that volunteering can help people learn important life lessons.

"You want to teach your children right, that it's not just about you," Dale Stucker of Pack 20 said. "There's a lot more people out there that can benefit from the access that we have in our lives."

In Cape Girardeau and the surrounding area, 48,343 foods items were collected.

In Southeast Missouri and areas of southern Illinois, scouts collected 210,632 items.

Scouts in the Greater St. Louis Area collected 1,811,354 food items.
