CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

A Chicago man was arrested in Carbondale Thursday after allegedly leaving the scene of an accident.

Carbondale police officers were sent to the 1200 block of East Main Street Thursday at about 7:40 a.m., in reference to a report of a single vehicle crash.

When they got there, officers found an unoccupied silver 2004 Chrysler 4 door which had crashed and was on fire.

The Carbondale Fire Department responded and put out the fire.

The driver of the vehicle ran from officers, but was quickly apprehended after a brief chase.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Jason T. Newman, 19, of Chicago, and was determined to be the only occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash.

During the course of the investigation Newman was arrested for no valid driver’s license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, hit and run accident with property damage, use of cell phone prohibited and resisting/obstructing a peace officer.

Newman was taken to the Jackson County Jail.

The investigation into this incident is continuing.
