CAPTURED! Man who escaped police in Jackson Co. back in custody

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office says a who escaped from custody on Thursday night on Haulage Road has been captured.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, at around 1:38 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20 they received a call from a citizen near Chamness Rd. and the Elkville blacktop that he spotted 43-year-old James Earl Bailey.

Law enforcement responded to the area and deputies say they were able to confine Bailey to a wooded area near where he was spotted.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office's K-9 unit searched the area and Bailey was found by the K-9.

Deputies say he was taken to an area hospital to be assessed for any injuries.

Bailey was cleared by medical staff and taken to the Jackson County Jail where he is being held on charges of unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle and escape.

His bond was set at $500,000.

The sheriff's office reported that Elkville police officers were dispatched on Thursday evening in response to a man driving a truck, pulling two trailers with no taillights.

Elkville police initiated a traffic stop at 7:06 on Thursday night at the intersection of Haulage Road and Lichliter Road.

At that time, police discovered the suspect, 43-year-old James E. Bailey of Elkville, was driving a stolen truck.

Bailey was taken into custody, handcuffed and placed in the rear of a squad car.

The sheriff's office reports moments after deputies arrived on scene, Bailey opened the rear door of the squad car and escaped from custody.

Bailey ran off into a wooded area near the intersection.

Officers on scene could not locate Bailey.

Jackson County Sheriff's deputies and K-9 units are in the area assisting in the search as of 1:45 a.m.

Sgt. Mark Wilson encouraged hunters to be on the lookout for the man as they head out early on Friday morning.

Agencies who assisted in the capture of Bailey were the Elkville Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff's Office, Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources' police.
