Michael Wacha visits Poplar Bluff for Boys, Girls Club event

The Boys and Girls Club mission is to bring smiles to the faces of children in the after school activities they provide and Michael Wacha provided a lot of smiles at their fundraiser on Thursday night.

Wacha spoke at the 4th annual Steak and Burger event in Poplar Bluff.

He talked about how the Boys and Girls Club was a big deal to his family growing up in Texarkana, and he was just happy to be able to give back to an organization that had given so much to his family when he was a child.

He sat down with us before the fundraiser started and talked about what it was like to play for an organization like the Cardinals, especially what it's like to play with Yadier Molina.

"I can't describe how helpful it is having him behind the plate while you're out there," Wacha said with a grin. "Especially as a young guy, first getting called up, everything's just going so fast, but he helps you slow the game down, and helps you really just focus on the next pitch mentality."

The Cardinals had a lot of momentum going into the postseason but were plagued all year by injuries, the most demoralizing being the loss of ace Adam Wainwright four starts into the season.

However, Wacha noted that Wainwright's work ethic inspired the team.

"That's one of the huge obstacles we had to overcome this year, having our ace go out after three or four starts this year," he said. "Having him back, seeing the way he worked his tail off... I think that's the fastest anyone has ever come back from an Achilles tear. Seeing him come back and get back on the mound, it shows why he's our leader."

Pitchers and catchers report on February 17 for spring training. The rest of the team joins them on the 22nd.
