ILLINOIS (KFVS) -

The Illinois Fraternal Order of Police is offering tips to help shoppers remain safe and keep their purchases during the holidays.

One tip is to make sure you don't buy more than you can carry.

Some others include:

  • Save all your receipts to help you verify credit card or bank statements.
  • Wait until asked before taking out your credit card or checkbook.
  • An enterprising thief may try to shoulder surf to get your account information.
  • Tell a security guard if you see an unattended bag or package.
  • When you walk to your car, carry your purse close to your body or your wallet inside a front pants pocket.
  • Have your keys in your hand as you approach your car.
  • Check the backseat and around the vehicle before you get in.
  • Make sure packages aren't visible through your windows.
  • Lock them in the trunk if possible or take them immediately home.
  • If you're shopping online, update your security software.
  • Keep personal information private and your password secure.
  • Do not respond to requests to "verify" your password or credit card information unless you initiated the contact.
  • Beware of "bargains" from companies you're not familiar with.
  • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Use secure websites for purchases.
  • Look for the icon of a locked padlock at the bottom of your screen or "https" in the URL address.
  • Shop with companies you know and trust.
