Johnson Co. officials seeking to fund new buildings

VIENNA, IL (KFVS) -

County leaders in Johnson County are saying some of their buildings are becoming a safety hazard and are seeing the end of their days.

The “Annex,” across the street from the Johnson County Courthouse in Vienna, has many offices and departments, from the treasurer and county clerk’s office to the sheriff’s department.

County Commissioner Ernie Henshaw said some of these buildings have been up for about 100 years and it's starting to show.

Henshaw said there have been fixes on the buildings in the past, but says it's beyond renovation.

Now the county is looking to put a 1 percent increase on sales tax on the ballot next year to generate funds to construct a new building.

“We’ve got potential issues coming ahead and quite honestly, what it’s going to do is just continue to cost us money and we’re not getting rid of the problem,” Henshaw said. “You know the old analogy, ‘kicking the can down the road,’ that’s kind of where we’re at now. We’re going to have to take a proactive approach and address this problem.”

Henshaw said the issue has been on the ballot before but did not pass.

"We're hoping to educate more on this issue this time around," Henshaw said.
