Bill introduced would authorize buyouts for Olive Branch homeowners affected by floods

OLIVE BRANCH, IL (KFVS) -

An Illinois representative is sponsoring a new bill that will release promised funds to provide buyouts for families whose homes were destroyed by flooding in Olive Branch.

Rep. Brandon Phelps (D-Harrisburg) is sponsoring the bill.

House Bill 4339 would transfer state funds for the purpose of completing buyouts for homes that were destroyed beyond repair during the 2011 floods.

The federal government provided funds to the families through the Federal Emergency Management Agency; however, due to the budget impasse in Springfield, state agencies do not have the authority to spend the state's portion despite the money already being approved by legislators.

This situation has left many families in limbo because they have not been given the funds that were promised to them.
