Shoeboxes packed in Marion, IL to help children worldwide

MARION, IL (KFVS) -

People at Cornerstone Church and Murdale Baptist Church got together on Thursday, packing shoeboxes all for a good cause.

It’s all apart of Operation Christmas Child, filling shoeboxes with various items from toys to hygiene products to be sent to children across the world.

Cornerstone Church in Marion is one of the drop off locations.

Murdale Baptist Church has been collecting items for the shoe boxes year around for the past 15 years, and dropped off about 1,400 boxes on Thursday morning at Cornerstone Church.

“We just can’t hardly imagine how exciting a child can be when they’ve never had anything and they receive that," Murdale Baptist Church member, Glenda Cowan said. "And open that box, it’s amazing.”

Operation Christmas Child is apart of Samaritan’s Purse project.

Last year, organizers say southern Illinois collected more than 18,900 shoeboxes to be sent to children throughout the world.

This year, they're hoping to reach 21,000. The collection drive will be going on until Monday, November 23.
