SIU Carbondale aviation students receive scholarships

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Fourteen students enrolled in the nationally recognized aviation program offered through Southern Illinois University Carbondale received scholarships during the fall aviation banquet.

The Oct. 30 banquet, hosted at the university’s Transportation Education Center at Southern Illinois Airport, focused on student academic achievements.

Capt. Marshall Warren, a Boeing 777 lead line check airman with Delta Air Lines, was the keynote speaker.

The Aviation Management Society, a registered student organization, sponsors the banquet.

The scholarships honor SIU Carbondale graduates and all support students in the aviation flight, aviation management and aviation technologies programs; the programs are apart of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts.

Scholarship winners, by hometown, year in school, major, and parents, are:

Illinois

  • Byron: Pat Fraze, senior, aviation management, son of Larry Fraze; Ryan McShane HopeFLYs Scholarship.
  • Chicago: Kevin D. Grandberry, Jr., junior, aviation flight, son of Kevin and Allison Grandberry; William R. Norwood Aviation Scholarship; Steven Staples Aviation Scholarship.
  • Collinsville: Alex Scholl, junior, aviation flight, son of Fred and Amy Scholl; James and Helen Newby Aviation Scholarship.
  • Deer Park: John Passehl, junior, aviation flight, son of Robert and Janice Passehl; Jerry L. Kennedy Aviation Career Advancement Scholarship; Mike Peters Aviation Interviews.com Scholarship.
  • Geneva: Dalton Thompson, sophomore, aviation flight, son of Mark and Darcy Thompson; Larry B. Byerly Memorial Scholarship; Mike Peters AviationInterviews.com Scholarship.
  • Lake in the Hills: Jonathan R. Dowell, senior, aviation management; son of Randy and Karen Dowell; Joseph A. Messina II Aviation Explorers Scholarship.

Missouri

New Jersey

Texas

  • Houston: Rojean Heimstreet, junior aviation management, son of Richard and Fariba Heimstreet; Kevin D. Moore Memorial Scholarship; Mike Peters AviationInterviews.com Scholarship; William R. Norwood Aviation Scholarship.

The 18 awards totaled $51,000, and ranged from $1,000 to $7,000.
