Severe weather safe room built at Lincoln Elementary

MARION, IL (KFVS) -

When bad weather hits, students and faculty at Lincoln Elementary say they'll be prepared.

Through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Marion Unit Two school, Lincoln was able to construct a safe room.

The 8,100 square foot facility serves as a cafeteria and a safe room in times of severe weather. Some of the features include steel reinforced walls and roof and storm shutters.

"This facility in a storm, in a severe storm, can hold about 1100 people," Lincoln principal, John Fletcher said. "So we could take our students plus a considerable amount of community or neighborhood members also."

Fletcher says the school has about 600 students and 55 faculty.

School administrators say the $2.1 million project began in October 2014 and finished up this past September...

Marion Unit Two is hoping to have a community open house to talk about the safe room later this fall or winter.
