Perry Co. highway dept. workers return to work

PERRY COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

On September 8, workers at the Perry County Highway Department showed up to work, and were told to go home.

Regulation dictated that a foreman, or the county engineer, must be on-site for daily operations.

Several months ago, the former foreman retired, and Perry Co. Highway Engineer Brian Otten was acting as the sole supervisor.

Otten goes on a family vacation around this time of the year, and office secretary Beth Lipe said Otten had planned for a temporary foreman to stand in during his scheduled vacation.

The night before Otten was scheduled to leave, the temp backed out, and workers spent that Friday and Monday at home.

On the night of the following Monday, county officials decided to temporarily promote one of the highway departments’ employees to foreman on a six-month trial period.

Work resumed on Wednesday, and the county engineer returned from vacation on Thursday, according to Lipe.
