Southeast MO State University DPS director cited for DWI

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The director of the Department of Public Safety at Southeast Missouri State University was cited for a DWI Thursday night.

According to the Cape Girardeau Police Department, someone driving behind a vehicle called to report a driver who committed several traffic violations. The caller believed the driver was impaired.

An officer stopped the vehicle near the intersection of Pacific and Good Hope.

James Douglas Richards, 59, of Cape Girardeau was arrested around 10:30 p.m.

He was later released with citations of violating an ordinance of driving while intoxicated and failure to drive on the right side of the roadway.

Richards was placed on medical leave, according to Southeast Missouri State University, and has been relieved of his duties. He has since resigned for the purpose of retirement, effective December 1.
