CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) -

A Charleston man is facing felony charges this week after an investigation revealed the man had allegedly engaged in victim tampering.

Mississippi County Sheriff Keith Moore says the investigation began last month when jail officials learned that former inmate Jitwaun Devarr McCain, 31, of Charleston, had violated an order of protection while jailed on domestic assault charges.

McCain was booked into the Mississippi County Detention Center in late June on charges of domestic assault.

While jailed, he was served an order of protection which kept him from contacting the victim in his pending case.

The investigation revealed that during his time in the Mississippi County Detention Center, McCain had defied the order by communicating with and attempting to influence the testimony of the victim in his pending domestic assault case.

Over the weekend, McCain was arrested and returned to the Mississippi County Detention Center.

McCain is charged with tampering with a victim in a felony prosecution, and violation of an order of protection.

In addition to the latest charges, McCain is also charged with two counts of domestic assault in the second degree, and had been out of jail on bond at the time of his arrest.

“Stopping violence and witness tampering are high priorities for my office.” said Sheriff Moore. “Victim intimidation undermines the integrity of the criminal justice system, and we are committed to making sure those responsible are made to face the consequences.”

McCain was jailed in the Mississippi County Detention Center with his bond set at $150,000.
