SIU basketball team signs two from St. Louis area

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Southern Illinois University announced Wednesday that the basketball program has signed a pair of high school senior guards from the St. Louis area.

Brendon Gooch is a 6'5", 180-pound wing from Belleville Althoff (Ill.) High School.

Last year, he averaged 13.6 points and 7.7 rebounds per game and was named Class 3A honorable mention All-State.

He helped Althoff to a 29-4 record and a second-place finish at the state tournament.

He led the team with 56 blocked shots and also hit 41 3-pointers.

Aaron Cook is a 6'1", 170-pound point guard from Westminster Christian Academy (Mo.), who averaged 16.5 points as a junior last season and helped his team to a 24-6 record and district championship.

SIU's roster currently has just one player from the St. Louis area and head coach Barry Hinson said he was determined to reestablish recruiting ties to the area, which has long served as a pipeline of talent for Southern's program.
