Anna Fire Dept. sees increase in community relations after online initiative

It's been roughly a year since the Anna Fire Department has profiled a fire fighter on their Facebook page; and they say it has helped build more of a relationship with the community.

"So a lot of times people see us out and things like that. They don't really get the human side of us too," Anna firefighter Scott Bennett said. "We're not just guys up here that take the trucks but we also have families and everything like that."

On Tuesday, they introduced Anna Fire Fighter Justin Goodman. He has been with the department for seven months and joined because he wanted to work in the emergency field and loves helping people.

Bennett said this isn't the first firefighter they have profiled.

Since they started the "Meet the Fireman" initiative, they have grown from just around 300 page "likes" to now more than 1,200.

Bennett said not only does this help the community know who is behind the fire suit, but helps them to be better informed of events and other information the fire department wants to get out to the public.

"This spring, whenever we had flooding here in town, chief actually took a picture of the road flooded here," Bennett said. "That was seen by over a thousand people online. They were able to share it and get that information out there. So we're able to get that information through more people when we reach them through our Meet the Fireman page."

Bennett said while they already have a great relationship with their community, it always helps when they find more ways to reach the public and also so they can reach them as well.
