Four Heartland veterans are among 35 across the state being recognized for going above and beyond.

They have served our countries, but now they are volunteering and serving their communities.

Our local veterans receiving the 2015 Lieutenant Governor’s Veterans Service Award are Roger Wheeler of Kennett, Dr. Farrah McSpadden of Poplar Bluff, Ruth Ann Skaggs of Fredericktown and Dennis Sweet of Park Hills.

This award is given out by Missouri Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder each year.

“This year we had an exceptional group of nominations,” said Kinder, “and I look forward to meeting these hometown heroes and getting to know them a bit better.”

All 35 of the veterans will be honored later this year at a banquet in their honor.

Kinder started the award back in 2012.

Since then, people from all over the state have sent in more than 600 nominations.
