SIU plans events for week of action against sexual violence on campus

Students at Southern Illinois University are taking a stand against sexual assault on campus.

The SIUC ‘It's On Us’ Task Force is working to find solutions for issues regarding sexual violence. The student-led task force will work to prevent future assaults at SIU. The group is part of a nationwide ‘It's On Us’ movement. Organizers say it is a cultural movement aimed at fundamentally shifting the way people think about sexual assault.

The SIU task force is comprised of undergraduate and graduate students.

“In order to end sexual violence and rid our communities of the stigma surrounding sexual violence, the support of all members of our community is crucial,” said SIU law student and task force member Andriana Bicanin.

The task force organized a week of events as part of a national week of action against sexual violence.

Tuesday, November 11 at 5 p.m. a student improvisational group, will perform in Lawson 171.

Thursday, November 12 there will be a self-defense class starting at 6:45 p.m. followed by a showing of “The Hunting Ground” an award-winning documentary about sexual assaults on college campuses. The movie will be shown in the Student Health Center Auditorium.

The week concludes on Friday, November 13 with a resource fair at the SIU Student Center Art Alley beginning at 11 a.m.
