SCOTT CITY, MO (KFVS) -

Formal charges were filed against the man arrested after a standoff with Scott City police early Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday Brent Whittington, 25, of Scott City, was charged with domestic assault 2nd degree, felonious restraint, unlawful use of a weapon, resisting arrest.

According to the Scott City Police Department, officers responded to a report of domestic assault in progress at 603 Harvard on Tuesday morning.

When officers arrived, they found a man with what they believed to be a shotgun.

The man had barricaded himself inside the home with three other people.

Officers then established a perimeter around the residence and called for additional law enforcement to respond.

For approximately 50 minutes, officers held the perimeter and attempted to contact Whittington by phone. Whittington answered and spoke with officers, but then disconnected.

Whittington then set down the gun and walked out of the residence unarmed.

Officers then attempted to secure and handcuff Whittington, but he resisted and one officer deployed a taser, eventually gaining compliance.

The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

Police say they were able to safely rescue a woman and child from the home.

A third person stayed inside the home until the suspect surrendered, according to police.

When officers entered the home, they located a loaded shotgun. After speaking with the residents, officers learned that Whittington had pushed one subject around before dragging her into a bedroom using a “chokehold.” When the woman managed to get away from Whittington with her infant child, she went to the garage where Whittington blocked the door while holding the shotgun. Whittington then stated he would kill anyone who attempted to enter the residence.

Police say the scene was secured around 2 a.m.

According to police, the suspect is currently being held at the Scott City jail.
