The Bonne Terre Police Department responded to a call for an attempted abduction on Sunday.
Police received the call around 5:30 p.m.
They say a 13-year-old boy was fishing at the city lake at Lakeview Park when a man approached him and tried to talk to him. The man then left.
Police say a short time later, the man returned and tried to grab the boy. The boy dodged him and the man fell into the lake. They say the man then tried to grab the man again and the boy dodged again.
According to police, the boy then ran nearly a mile to a BP gas station where he saw an officer in his patrol car. The boy told the officer what happened and police immediately went to the lake.
Officers searched the lake and the wooded area around the lake, but did not find the suspect.
According to Bonne Terre Police Chief Doug Calvert, they are reviewing video from a camera mounted in the park.
Calvert said this incident is top priority right now and they are taking it very seriously.
The man is described as a white male in his 40s with dark hair and a gray beard. It was reported that he was wearing a black shirt, blue jeans and green shoes.
People at the park say they hang out there every day, but no one we talked to said they were there at the time of the incident.
Neighbors told us they are scared for their children and grandchildren, and worried there is someone out there that could try to take one of them. However, neighbors also say the Lakeview Park is still pretty safe since there usually are people there all day and night.
Chief Calvert said there is good lighting throughout the park and it is on a busy street. He said he hopes someone got a glimpse of this man or has information that can help them track the man down.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Bonne Terre Police Department at Central Dispatch at 573-431-3131.
