JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KFVS) -

Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster warns Missourians about scammers posting as debt collectors.

He said scammers will call individuals claiming to be from debt collection agencies attempting to collect debt the costumers do not owe.

Fake debt collectors will:

  • Seek payment on a unrecognizable debt
  • Refuse to give a mailing address or phone number
  • Ask for personal financial/information
  • Use threatening tactics
  • Continually harass about paying them

Koster recommends that consumers ask the caller for a name, company, street address, and telephone number. If they refuse, hang up.

Never give out any personal or financial information.

Contact your creditor if the debt is legitimate but you don't think the company is.

Finally, file a complaint with the Missouri Attorney General's office at 800-392-8222 or ago.mo.gov with information about the suspicious caller.
