Southeast students build new ICU for humane society

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Students at Southeast Missouri State University are using a class project to help dogs and cats in the area.

Construction management students are building a new Intensive Care Unit for the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri.

The new ICU will have its own air supply and laundry to prevent illnesses from spreading.

The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri's current ICU doesn't fit its needs.

Donations from the community and local businesses have helped offset the cost of this new building and it's providing a great learning experience for these students.

"And it's very meaningful. It's not just something that we're building in as a lab in a college course," said Southeast Missouri State University instructor John Dudley. "But this is actually going to go out into society and it's going to be used. So the experience becomes very meaningful."

When it's done the building will be moved to it's permanent home at the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri.
