Poplar Bluff physics class competes for five-figure scholarship

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -

For the second year in a row, Kathy Miller's physics class at Poplar Bluff High School is set to compete regionally in a Missouri Department of Transportation sponsored model bridge building contest.

The prize is a $10,000 civil engineering scholarship to a heartland university.

The resulting projects will be judged on Thursday, Nov. 19 in Cape, based on structural efficiency.

The students were given four weeks to create a bridge design that will hold at least seven pounds.

The structure must be between 16-20 inches long and 2-9 inches wide and made out of the supplied 15 pieces of balsa wood, some string and a bottle of glue.

The annual competition was established 12 years ago and is intended for juniors and seniors in the Missouri Department of Transportation's Southeast District.
