Veteran's Day was established on Nov. 11 because fighting during World War I ceased between Allied nations and Germany on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. It was "the war to end all wars."

Then, in November 1919 President Wilson proclaimed that Nov. 11 would be the first commemoration of Armistice Day.

The United State Congress officially recognized the end of WWI with a resolution in 1926.
