Veterans honored at SIU football game

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Saturday's SIU football game against North Dakota State was the annual military appreciation game.

More than 15 armed services volunteer groups came out to the tailgate from 10 a.m. until kickoff at two.

World War II veteran George Elston Jr. was in the crowd with his daughter.

Elston graduated from SIU, fought in the second world war, and spent his career as a teacher in Herrin.

He's also studied meteorology extensively.

Elston says he enjoys an active public life, partly because he can keep tabs on the students he's taught over the years.

"I go to all the football games, and basketball games." Elston explained on Saturday, "I just feel very lucky, and I do read about some of the students I've had, what they've done, what they've accomplished, and I'm very proud of them."

Current and former service members enjoyed free food and game tickets, a tribute from the Marching Salukis before kickoff, as well as recognition during the game.
