POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -

A Poplar Bluff man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in connection with his 2013 baseball bat attack that killed his father and critically injured his mother.

Matthew Dale Jenkins, 29, was originally charged with two-counts of first-degree assault and armed criminal action after he attacked Carl Don Jenkins, 56, and Vicki Jenkins, 62, in their Poplar Bluff home in January 2013.

Prosecutors reportedly upgraded those charges when relatives decided to remove Jenkins' father from life support 15 days after the attack. His mother died last October.

Jenkins pleaded guilty in September to second-degree murder.

Prosecutors dropped related charges of felony assault and two counts of armed criminal action.

Investigators say Jenkins confessed to the crime and says it all started with an argument.

Jenkins reportedly tried to give his parents first aid and then called 911.
