Giant City State Park to have prescribed fires

MAKANDA, IL (KFVS) -

The Illinois Dept. of Natural Resources has planned prescribed burns for Giant City State Park.

The prescribed fires will take place, weather permitting, between Nov. 1, 2015 and March 31, 2016.

The sites affected will be posted 24 hours before the fires.

Portions of the park will be closed and the acreage of each burn will vary.

The goal is to improve habitat for wildlife, to reduce fuel load and wildfire hazard, and to promote Oak and Hickory regeneration.

The primary burn site locations are:

  • North of Stonefort Rd., east of Shelter #1
  • Southwest corner of the park, west of Shiloh Rd.
  • Fern Rocks Nature Preserve
