CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Show Me Center will host the 2015 MSHSAA State Girls Volleyball Championships for the 5th time this weekend.
The tournament will be a showdown among 16 teams from across the state of Missouri, including schools from as far as St. Joseph, Mo.
Wil Gorman, the director of the Show Me Center says the city benefits from the event because the players, their coaches, and their families spend money at hotels, restaurants and may even do a little shopping.
"It really affects the downtown area because there are restaurants and businesses down there that do really well over the course of the weekend. Then also all the hotels and everything out by the interstate are sold out. You've got to go to Sikeston or Perryville to get a hotel room," Gorman said.
According to Chuck Martin, the Executive Director at the Cape Girardeau Visitors and Convention Bureau, the event has helped make Cape Girardeau a regional hub for amateur sporting events.
Martin says the volleyball tournament was the first state championship to call southeast Missouri home since the 1950s.
Since then, it's laid the foundation for additional events like the USGA Women's State Team Championship.
Looking forward, Martin says the city hopes to attract even more events with the development of the indoor sports complex.
The 120,000 square foot facility will include turf for things like indoor soccer, hardwood floors for basketball and volleyball and also batting and golf cages and a walking track.
Girls will begin practicing for volleyball tournament at the Show Me Center on Thursday at 10 a.m.
Competition is set to start at 9 a.m. on Friday and run through Saturday.
