Don't be surprised if your social media feeds are filled with cat pictures and videos today.

October 29th is officially National Cat Day!

National Cat Day was started ten years ago by pet lifestyle expert and animal welfare advocate, Colleen Paige.

Since then cat lovers have adopted the day to celebrate the feline friends in their lives for the unconditional love and companionship that they bestow.

Since its inception, Paige says National Cat Day has helped save the lives of more than one million cats.

To help you celebrate, here are some fun facts you may not know about cats:

  • Cats are the most popular pet in the United States: There are 88 million pet cats and 74 million dogs.
  • Cats can rotate their ears 180 degrees. They have more than 20 muscles to control their ears.
  • Most cats have no eyelashes.
  • Meows are not innate cat language—they developed them to communicate with humans!
  • Some believe that if you dream about a white cat, good luck will follow.
  • A group of cats is called a clowder.
  • Cats sleep 70% of their lives.
  • Researchers say owning a cat can reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack by a third.
  • Female cats are typically right-pawed while male cats are typically left-pawed.
