Rend Lake College offers courses on flying drones

REND LAKE, IL (KFVS) -

As drones become more popular, Rend Lake College is offering a course that teaches you how to fly them.

The nine credit-hour occupational certificate at RLC includes three courses that can be taken consecutively through one semester.

Introduction to UAS will be held from 5-10 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays between January 12 and February 25, followed by Advanced UAS at the same time and days of the week between March 1 and March 31.

The final course, UAS Law and Test Prep will again meet on the same days, at the same times, from April 5 through May 26.

In the Intro to UAS class, students will learn about the safety procedures, human factors, payloads and information gathering, while also incorporating flight simulations and live flying exercises.

The Advanced UAS course will expand on those topics and specifically focus on using a UAS in the computer science, criminal justice, and agricultural fields. The final course, UAS Law and Test Prep, will cover current Federal Aviation Administration guidelines on the flight of a UAS in U.S. airspace, plus any applicable state and federal laws.

A special test preparation portion of the class will also help students study the FAA material to pass the UAS Certification examination.

To become a certified UAS operator, students must pass a criminal background check, be 17 years of age, pass an aeronautical knowledge test, and be vetted by the Transportation Security Administration.

To learn more about the program call RLC's Applied Science and Technology Division at 618-437-5321, Ext. 1261.
