IL charity provides meals for 1,500 children in need

A small organization is making an impact in a big way.

Gum Drops, a non-profit charity in Carterville, Illinois, has a backpack program where volunteers come and help put together weekend meals for children in need of them.

Ron Simpson said his wife, Amy Simpson, had the idea; and it started back in January of 2008, helping about 12 children in Carterville.

Now, that number has grown to more than 1,500 children throughout southern Illinois, from Carterville out to Metropolis.

“The Lord said we need to take care of everybody, and that’s what we’re trying to do, take care of as many kids as we can," Ron Simpson said. "And that’s where it all comes from. It really is."

Volunteers meet at the Gum Drops facility three times a week to prep the weekend meals.

They are delivered and handed out to children of all ages in various schools throughout southern Illinois.
