CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

John A. Logan College showed students and others in Carterville, Illinois what life was like during the Civil War on Thursday.

Civil War reenactors stood across campus including both confederate and union soldiers and including reenactors of leaders such as President Abraham Lincoln and General Robert E. Lee.

Other actors showed students what kind of music people listened to, what weapons were used, and how people dressed. Actors also lit off a civil war replica cannon.

Allen Winthrop played a Confederate Lieutenant and he's from Elkville, Illinois. He said it's an experience students can't get in the classroom.

"Teach kids a little history that they don't get in school," Winthrop said. "They only get so much and it's a little sanitized version. You know, there really were confederate soldiers."

This is the 11th annual civil war days at JALC.
