VIENNA, IL (KFVS) - Elementary students in Cyprus, Illinois raised nearly $800 for breast cancer awareness.
The project started with one teacher whose sister-in-law had breast cancer. Then the entire school participated in painting dozens of pumpkins pink and placing them in a pattern that formed a huge pink ribbon.
That teacher talked about how important it was to get the children involved in the project.
"I'm thankful to our school, the principal and such that allowed us to do this," Cindy Gholson, teacher at Cypress Elementary, said.
"It gives the kids a chance to think about others and to think about a very real life experience. And I want to thank the teachers for taking time out of their busy day to do that."
A photo of the pumpkins was submitted to a radio contest and has raised about $800 so far.
