An Alton, Illinois man was sentenced to prison on Tuesday, Oct. 20 for sexual assault.

Robert J. Jacquot, 54, was charged in Jackson County Circuit Court with one count of criminal sexual assault. He was sentenced to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Jacquot will also serve a period of mandatory supervised release from three years to his natural life after his release from the IDOC.

According to Jackson County State's Attorney Michael C. Carr, Jacquot will have to serve at least 85 percent of this sentence.

On Dec. 30, 2014, officers with the Alton, Illinois Police Department began investigating an allegation of sexual assault allegedly committed by Jacquot.

Officers say the victim, told them that Jacquot sexually assaulted her when she was 15 years old, which would have been between 1998 and 1999. The victim said the assault took place in DeSoto, Ill.

According to investigators, Jacquot admitted to the sexual assault. They say he admitted that the victim would have been between 15 and 17, which would have been between 1998 and 2000.

According to Carr, Illinois law allows for prosecutions of sexual assault cases involving minors if brought within 20 years of the minor turning 18.

The investigation was conducted by the Alton Police Department. Assistant State's Attorney Casey Bloodworth prosecuted this case.
