CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A ribbon cutting for the new Capaha Park pavilion and playground will be held on Friday, Oct. 23 at 11 a.m.

The new additions will take the place of the old playground and the Capaha pool that was demolished in 2011 due to age.

This is considered Phase 1 of 6 from the Capaha Park Master Plan that was completed in 2014. Phase 1 also included improved pedestrian access, sidewalks, benches, fountains and landscaping.

These park improvements were funded through the Parks, Recreation and Stormwater Tax that was passed in 2008.

According to the city, future plans for Capaha Park, should funding allow, include new restrooms, splash pad, stormwater and drainage renovations, and ballfield enhancements along with improved access to the Dan Cotner Amphitheatre.

The goal of the renovations is to create a place where people can enjoy both safely and efficiently.

That's why a lot of the renovations deal with park aesthetics and accessibility.

To reserve a new shelter, or for more information on Capaha Park, you can call the Parks and Recreation Department at 573-339-6340.
