CAMBRIA, IL (KFVS) -

After searching for nearly nine hours, authorities captured an armed and dangerous man who allegedly shot at a Cambria police officer.

Illinois State Police report Billy J. Jearlds, 23, of Carterville was walking on Sycamore Road about a half mile west of Cambria Road around 10:45 p.m. on Monday when a Cambria police officer approached him.

After making contact with police, the suspect ran away into some nearby woods.

Police say as Jearlds ran away, he shot in the direction of the officer. The officer returned fire.

The Cambria officer was not injured in the shooting.

ISP reports Jearlds was located at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday near where he was accused of shooting at the officer the night before.

He was taken into custody without incident.

An ambulance was called to the scene because Jearlds had a minor wound. It was unknown if the wound is related to the shooting.

Authorities with ISP, Williamson County and Jackson County Sheriff's deputies, and police officers from Cambria, Carbondale, Crainville, Carterville, Marion, Herrin and Energy departments helped with the investigation.
