METROPOLIS, IL (KFVS) -

Tens of thousands traveled to Massac County over the weekend to take a step back in time at the annual Fort Massac encampment.

Fort Massac (now a state park,) was A British, French, and American military outpost in the late 1700s.

On Sunday, reenactors created a wide-scale battle scene for a crowd gathered near the park’s center.

Outside of the staging area, cultural traditions and demonstrations were set up by hobbyists who camped out for the weekend.

Thomas Connor’s family has been a part of the reenactment for three generations, and says he spent a considerable amount of his free time researching his character every year.

“If you want to go out and do something with the public, and you want to portray a certain type of persona, you have to give them the correct knowledge.”

“This is one of the only ways that people can show their children how their ancestors lived” explained spectator Ann Gill on Sunday.

The event was hosted by the Illinois Department of Natural resources.
