MSHP: Kennett man who died in police custody died of natural causes

KENNETT, MO (KFVS) -

A Kennett, Mo. man who died after he was arrested Sunday morning died of natural causes.

No foul play is suspected in the death of Ernest Williams, 43, of Kennett after an autopsy was performed, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Williams died after he was taken into custody by Kennett police and complained of shortness of breath.

Officers with the Kennett Police Department conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Baldwin and Clipper streets around 12:31 a.m.

During the stop, a person inside the stopped car ran away and was chased by officers.

The suspect was found hiding behind a home in the 600 block of North Jackson Street and arrested.

Williams was taken to the Kennett Police Department where he began complaining of shortness of breath.

An ambulance was called and Williams was taken to the Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center.

He later reportedly was unresponsive and pronounced dead.

Preliminary autopsy findings show Williams had hypertension and cardiovascular disease. A final report is expected in six to eight weeks.

The coroner's office is still investigating.
