Vargas talks about first Homecoming as university president at Southeast

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Southeast Missouri State University will culminate Homecoming week on Saturday with a litany of festivities

This is the first Homecoming for University President Dr. Carlos Vargas after taking over the position vacated by Dr. Ken Dobbins earlier this year.

"I am full of energy because I am absorbing the energy from the community," Vargas said.

Vargas plans to be front and center for a number of the events being held.

"In many ways they are telling me where I am supposed to go and what I am supposed to be doing, but to me that's an exciting opportunity," Vargas said. "I want to be as close possible to the various events to show the alumni the kind of interest I have in connecting with them and the students."

Before coming to Southeast, Vargas spent time at at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, Central State University in Ohio and Kent State University, but he said Southeast's alumni and student body raise the bar when it comes to "excitement, energy and appreciation" for the university.

"It is wonderful to be in a place where people talk positively about the institution," Vargas said.

Vargas will be giving the public a first-hand look at what he does by taking over Southeast's Instagram account on Saturday.

"Sometimes students want to be able to know what the president does," Vargas said. "[I want to] show them the level of involvement... I have with the campus, the students and the community."

This year's Homecoming Parade them is "Southeast: It's Your Move." Entries into the parade be modeled after popular board games. The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
