Students return to class after furnace fire at Murphysboro High School

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) -

Students have returned to class after a furnace fire caused the staff to evacuate the Murphysboro High School Thursday morning.

Murphysboro Principal Tony Wilson says a heating element in a furnace burned and cause smoke to travel through the ventilation system.

A spokesperson with the Murphysboro School District says staff saw smoke in the school and started evacuating the building when the fire alarm went off.

Everyone was accounted for and safe. Students were taken to the football field. They returned to the school around 11 a.m.
