A Poplar Bluff man who was charged in connection to the shooting death of another man is now facing second degree murder charges.

Officials say Mitchell Dugger, 52, of Poplar Bluff, died after he was shot during a violent family argument at a hospital.

Eddie Skorcz, 58, of Poplar Bluff was initially charged with first degree assault and armed criminal action.

Police say both men and other family members were at the hospital visiting a mutual relative when things got heated. They say Skorcz shot Dugger in the leg and shoulder.

Officers got a call of the shooting in the 2600 block of North Westwood Blvd at 7:24 p.m.

According to the probable cause statement, when police arrived they found a man lying on the ground and bleeding profusely from the leg.

Duggar was taken to the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center Emergency Room. He was then flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital and was later reported to be in serious condition.

According to a PBRMC security officer, he was told about the shooting and as he was walking out of the building, he saw an older man laying on top of Skorcz, pinning his wrist to the ground.

The security officer said he saw Skorcz holding a handgun. He said he was able to take the gun from Skorcz.

The gun was a .45 caliber Colt Defender and had six live rounds of ammunition. It was turned over to an officer, secured and placed in evidence.

Officers then interviewed some of the people on scene.

According to the probable cause statement, Skorcz and Dugger were arguing, which then turned physical. This caused two other men to begin fighting.

A fifth man told officers he turned his attention to the second pair of men and then heard two gunshots.

Court documents state the two men stopped fighting. Officers say the fifth man then held Skorcz down and Dugger was seen lying on the ground.

Some of the people in the fight and bystanders told police that Dugger was shot during a confrontation between family members.

Poplar Bluff patrol commander, Donald Trout, wanted to make it clear this family dispute had little to do with the hospital.

“From the investigation it is revealing that this is an ongoing conflict between family members," Trout said. "It just happened to come together on the parking lot of the hospital. It has nothing to do with the hospital, that’s just where it came together at.”

After being treated for a broken rib, Skorcz was taken to the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

Skorcz was arrested and taken to the Butler County Jail. His bond was set at $500,000.
