Car seriously hurts teen crossing the street in Mt. Vernon

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) -

A 16-year-old Mt. Vernon girl was flown to a hospital after coming in contact with a car as she was crossing the street.

According to Illinois State Police, Clay Gibson, 28, was driving south on N. 10th Street, approaching North Street in Mt. Vernon just before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

Police say the 16-year-old was attempting to cross N. 10th Street and ran into the path of the car.

ISP reports Gibson was unable to stop in time and hit the girl with the front end of his vehicle.

The 16-year-old was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries and later airlifted to a hospital in St. Louis.

The intersection is back open, but was closed for about four hours.

ISP is investigating the crash.
