KENNETT, MO (KFVS) -

A mother and her son are without a home after their house caught fire in Kennett on Wednesday night.

According to Kennett Director of Public Safety John Mallott, a home on the corner of 5th Street and Shady Lane is a complete loss after a fire started around 8:00 p.m.

The cause of the fire is unknown and believed to have started in the rear of the home.

No one was hurt.

Chief Mallott says, the mother and her son had just left the home an hour before the fire started.

Neighbors saw smoke coming from the home and called police.

When an officer arrived, flames could be seen coming from the home.

Before fire crews got to the scene, Chief Mallott says a couple of neighbors busted in the front door to save a couple of dogs inside.

According to Chief Mallott, after the door of the home was broken into, fresh air fed the fire and caused flames to quickly spread to the rest of the home.

There is no word if the family's dogs made it out of the home.

The Red Cross is helping the mother and son who lost everything in the fire.

The family did not have insurance.
