CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

The Carbondale City Council has appointed an interim city manager.

Gary Williams will serve as the interim city manager of Carbondale.

Williams has worked for the City of Carbondale since June of 2011. He is currently the city’s assistant city manager for economic development as well as the acting city manager.

"I'm really humbled," Williams said. "I think it's a great opportunity."

Williams says he has a background in private sector with real estate construction.

Carbondale's previous city manager stepped down from his position.

The City Council of the City of Carbondale agreed with Kevin Baity for him to step down from his position on October 1 due to a poor performance review.

The city had one other candidate other than Williams for the interim position.

The city is working with a consulting firm to find a permanent city manager. That search could take six to nine months.

The Carbondale mayor and city council will formalize the decision for the interim city manager at a meeting Tuesday night by voting on an ordinance to approve an interim city manager employment agreement.

The city council also plans to act on a resolution to direct the interim city manager to enter into an amended employment agreement contract with Chief of Police Jeff Grubbs.

There will be a reception to introduce Williams and Chief Grubbs to the public after the city council meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
