Charleston man arrested after leading police on a chase

CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) -

A Charleston, Mo. man is behind bars after the gun he was carrying discharged during a short police chase.

The Charleston Department of Public Safety reports officers located Decarlos Clemons, 21, walking on Locust Street around 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 9.

At that time, he had an active misdemeanor warrant for his arrest.

When officers tried to talk with Clemons, they noticed he was unlawfully carrying a firearm. Charleston DPS reports Clemons then ran away from officers.

During the chase, Clemons allegedly tried to get rid of the gun, and tossed it to the ground. When the firearm hit the ground, it discharged.

Charleston DPS reports no on was injured when the gun went off.

Clemons was later taken into custody without incident.

He is being held in the Mississippi County Jail for multiple charges including: attempted assault of a law enforcement officer, unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm and resisting arrest.

His bond is set at $750,000 cash only.
